One of the reasons I initially wanted to start a blog was to share simple and easy patterns and projects. I first learned to crochet 8 years ago and was inspired by my aunt and her crocheting. I enjoy working on many different crochet projects and hope to share more with you. For today’s project, I worked up this simple dish cloth.

This is an easy crochet pattern for a dish cloth. It comes together in 45 minutes to an hour for beginners. Dish cloths are one of the easier patterns to work with when first learning to crochet. This pattern uses single crochet and half double crochet stitches.

Dish cloths are great as gifts for birthdays, housewarming gifts, etc. This pattern can be easily adjusted for width and length to meet your needs. The alternating rows of single and half double crochet add nice texture and a little depth to the cloth. This pattern can easily make up 3 dish cloths with one skein of yarn.

You will need:

  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • 1 skein of cotton yarn (I like to use Lily’s Sugar and Cream, 120 yards)
  • Size H crochet hook

Directions:

  1. For this medium-size dish cloth pattern, ch 18. You can adjust the pattern, smaller or larger, by changing the chain length.
  2. row 1: in second chain from hook, sc across, ch 1, turn.
  3. row 2: half double crochet across, ch 1, turn
  4. repeat steps 2-3 until you reach desired length. In this pattern, I repeated steps two and three 9 times to get 18 rows of alternating single crochet and half double crochet.

Border:

  • When you get to the end of your last row, ch 1 and turn. You will then start in the corner and go down the side of the dish cloth with half double crochet stitches to the next corner.
  • Add two half double crochet stitches in the corner and then proceed along the next side of the dish cloth. Work your way around, again adding two half double crochet stitches in each corner.
  • Finish off and weave in all ends.
